Crown Estate appoints Andy Wells new Head of Property in Scotland
The Crown Estate’s Scotland Portfolio has appointed Andy Wells, who is currently Head of Countryside, to the position of Head of Property.
Starting immediately, Andy will be responsible for the organisation’s rural and coastal portfolio which includes 37,000 hectares of rural land with forestry, farming, commercial & residential tenants as well as around half of Scotland’s coastline with ports, harbours and 5,800 installed moorings.
He replaces Alan Laidlaw, who is now Chief Executive of the Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland.
Since joining The Crown Estate as a Glenlivet Estate Ranger in 1990, Andy Wells has demonstrated a clear commitment to conservation, sustainable development and community engagement. His work has been recognised with a raft of international and national awards, including an honorary fellowship at the University of Edinburgh. He became Head of Countryside with responsibility for The Crown Estate’s rural estates across the UK in 2008.
His appointment comes at a busy time for The Crown Estate’s Scotland Portfolio with the organisation going through the process of devolving to Scottish Ministers under the 2016 Scotland Act.
Commenting on his appointment, Andy said: “I am looking forward to working closely with our tenants and partners in coastal and rural businesses, supporting sustainable land-use and helping communities and local business benefit from our team’s asset management expertise. The role offers exciting challenges in helping to steer the business through a period of change and we’ll continue to do all we can to place tenants’ and customers’ interests at the forefront of discussions.”
Ronnie Quinn, General Manager of The Crown Estate’s Scotland Portfolio, welcomed Andy’s appointment: “Andy brings a wealth of experience to this very important role. His track record in community engagement, countryside management and partnership working is second to none and I’m delighted to have him take up this key role during this important period for the business.”
